The caricatures of Olof Ottelin

Olof Ottelin (1917-1971) was both the manager of Stockmann’s furniture department and at the same time its main designer. Over the years he designed lots of pieces that have since become classics. One of his most known designs were for the Hanken School of Economics in Helsinki, which he furnished in 1952.

What he’s perhaps less known for are his caricatures and illustrations he created for the magazine Kaunis Koti in the 1950s and 1960s.

Here’s a great example containing caricatures of Olavi Hänninen, Antti Nurmesniemi, Ilmari Tapiovaara, Carl-Gustaf Hiort af Ornäs and one of himself.

This one describes the different design and chair styles that existed in the mid 1960s.

And perhaps the best one – a gallery of the design stars of the 1960s: Birger Kaipiainen, Dora Jung, Tapio Wirkkala, Rut Bryk, Ilmari Tapiovaara, Timo Sarpaneva, Yki Nummi, Antti Nurmesniemi, Börje Rajalin and the manager of the Finnish Society of Crafts and Design, H. O. Gummerus. Last but not least, Kaj Franck.
